The art of embroidery has had a long history and yet it remains to be quite popular until today. If you are interested in performing this craft, you need to start from the very basic stitches such that you can acquire the basic skills needed to handle complex tasks.

According to experts, there are five basic stitches that you must learn before moving onto the next phase: split stitch, backstitch, couching, stem stitch, and chain stitch. Each one have variant features and techniques, as well as their corresponding difficulty level.

The backstitch is one of the most common forms of embroidery stitches used. It is characterized by an encircling manner wherein your wrap a thread around the fabric as you continue to stitch. In some cases, you stitch through the same hole a couple of times. Learning how to execute the backstitch is very simple to learn, since all you have to think of is to produce even space in between the holes, as well as ensure that you have sufficient amount of thread to use. You will often find backstitch pattern used in clothes and blankets to seal the edges.

Meanwhile, there are two types of backstitch known in embroidery: split stitch and stem stitch. In Split stitch, you have the pierce the thread with a needle as it shows up on the back of the fabrci, which splits the thread in the process.

Chain stitching is another basic stitch in embroidery, which is ideal for decorative rather than constructive type of stitching. As the name implies, this type of stitch involves a series of loop stitches that look like a chain. You can learn more about how these basic stitches are performed through various sources online or offline.

The final type of basic embroidery stitch is known as couhing. It is the most complicated out of all the other types of stitches since it requires two sets of threads. The thread that you are going to attack must be thick and heavy as compared to the thread you use for binding the fabric together. There are various styles available for couching, such as Bokhara, Pendant, Oriental, Battlement, and square laid work. If you are interested with embroidery, experts suggest to start by learning the five basic stitches first.
